Minutes of Lavallette Voters and Taxpayers Association Meeting March 20, 2009
The meeting was called to order at 4 p.m. by President Joe Marcianti. Also present were 1st V.P.
Lach Cameron, Treasurer Alice Bass, Secretary Celeste Brockwell, and Directors Joe Ardito, Sara
Ardito and Ann Gorga.
The minutes and Treasurer's report were accepted as read.
Membership: 435 members which is ahead of last year at this time
Correspondence:
- Letter from a resident expressing concern for her grandchildren riding bikes on Route 35 North-favors extended hours for bike riding on Boardwalk and traffic light on Route 35 North and New York Ave.
- A letter of thanks from a resident to LVT for returning an $800 check sent to us in error. Also writes, 'we Lavallette Taxpayers that do not live in that great community year round are lucky to have folks like you who keep an eye on things for all of us."
- The Lavallette Fire Co. announcing their Pork Dinner on April 18th.
- The Lavallette Board of Education sent a letter directing us to a website concerning state regulations for school consolidation. The BOE did not direct any of their comments to the request by LVT to have an open-public meeting for residents for informational purposes.
- Flyer from Jersey Shore Nuclear Watch about their protest rally against the renewal of the operating license for Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant in Forked River NJ. Rally is from 12-4 p.m. at Huddy Park in Toms River NJ.
Municipal:
- Sewer infiltration: Rain in Borough has increased 10% since 2005. Suspected infiltration of water into the sewer system appears to come from home laterals-need to be identified. Sewer infiltration rate will be increased by $50.00 per year to the homeowner.
- Snow storm costs an extra $6,000 in additional labor.
- Purchase of a town used bus for $15,000
- One bid received for advertising on Lifeguard Stands and Lifeguard Tower. Expected total income around $136,000-Agency to get 75%, Borough 25%.
- Electrical rates to drop 10% in summer and 12% in winter
- Beach Badge fees increase for weekly from $20-$25; season $40-$45;
pre-season purchase of seasonal badge remains at $35.
- Bonded $185,000 for road improvements to Bond Ave.
- Contract with Concord Engineering Company for a cost of $37,454 to conduct energy audit of Borough. 75% of cost of audit paid State funds.
School report:
Spoke on school consolidation. Sara will follow up about LVT's request for BOE to have a public meeting on the subject as many other towns have done.
Parking committee: next meeting April 1st.
Lavallette Business Association (LBA): concerned about advertising on Beach.
LVT motions to send a letter to Mayor and Council in opposition to advertising on the Beach lifeguard stands and lifeguard tower. Mayor and Council should seek other ways to increase revenue such as better monitoring and sales of beach badges. LVT will take legal action if necessary.
Scholarships: Information was provided to Point Beach High School, Monsignor High School, listed on LVT's website and forwarded to The Ocean Star and The Asbury Park Press Newspapers. Deadline for receipt of applications is May 1st.
The internal audit report of LVT was read and approved.
Approval for General Liability Insurance for LVT not to exceed $500. upon renewal.
Donation of $50 will be sent to Jersey Shore Nuclear watch.
Assemblyman Reed Gusciora will speak at Borough Hall on April 16th at 7:30 p.m. He has sponsored a bill in the Assembly to consolidate Lavallette with Mantoloking, Seaside Heights and Seaside Park.
Candidate's Night for Board of Education candidates will be on April 17th at
7:30 pm at Borough Hall.
LVT potential summer get-together-inquiries were made by letter to Lavallette First Aid and Fire for use of their buildings-have not yet responded. Inquiry made to Ortley Beach First Aid who does rent their building.
Nominating Committee was appointed by LVT President Joe Marcianti to nominate President for one year and three Directors for a two-year term. The nominating committee is Lach Cameron, Ann Gorga and Sara Ardito.
