present were Treasurer, Alice Bass, Secretary, Celeste Brockwell and Director Ann Gorga.
Absent were President Joe Marcianti. 2nd Vice-President Pamela Boright arrived late.
Minutes from the November meeting: none-the meeting was cancelled due to the Special
Meeting of the Mayor and Council the same evening.
Membership: 727 paid memberships for 2007
Treasurer's report was accepted as read and filed with this report.
Correspondence: A letter inviting participation for the Dune grass planting
which occurred in November and a letter from the Mayor in reference to the creation
of a parking committee and inviting a submission of a name of an LVT member to participate.
Municipal report:
- Electric rates to double beginning January 1, 2008 due to wholesale power costs.
- Parking: The Mayor chose 11 citizens to review parking problems. Other
organizations received their request for participants in July. After a bit of the
'power of suggestion' the Mayor sent LVT a similar letter, but not until October.
Due to yellow curb painting, twenty parking spaces were lost.
The governing body is attempting to seek relief from the State to lessen the
distances required from stop signs and surrounding areas to capture more
parking. Angled parking spaces were also lost in front of the condos across
from Borough Hall.
- Liquor license: A proposal to change the ordinance to reduce the distance
between liquor licenses from 1500' to 450' failed by a vote of 4-2. A public hearing
with about 200 people was held. Most of the public supported the proposal including
groups such as the Planning Board, the Ordinance Committee and the Business Association.
Opposed were mostly residents who live in the vicinity of Bond Ave. Cost to the taxpayers
in legal fees is around $30,000 and between $50,000-$60,000 to the owner's of Lenny's
Restaurant who own the license. Lenny's has withdrawn its application and put their
house on Grand Central Ave. up for sale.
There was also discussion of the possibility of the owner of Gabriella's Restaurant selling
its Toms River liquor license and using its Lavallette license at Gabriella's-which is partly
in Ortley Beach (Toms River Twp.) and partly in Lavallette.
